4. The main organs
The type of containment for which a TBM is designed will require equipment specific to this mode, particularly for the evacuation of cuttings. However, there are components common to all types of TBM. The main ones are described below.
4.1 The shield
A TBM is made up of a shield and a follower train, commonly referred to as a "back-up". The shield is a steel structure offering protection from the ground. It is usually made up of three bodies:
a front body carrying the main drive and the cutting wheel;
an intermediate body welded or attached to the front body via a joint;
a third part consisting of a skirt in which the voussoirs are assembled....
