6. Thermal shock

Generally speaking, thermal shock represents the difference between extreme temperatures (minima and maxima) measured in the same plane of material over a defined period of time.

We can thus speak of thermal shock:

  • diurnal: temperature difference between day and night;

  • seasonal: temperature difference between winter and summer;

  • instantaneous: when a heated surface is suddenly brought into contact with a cold liquid.
