3. Conclusion
The upkeep and maintenance of our structures and infrastructures represent a major challenge for our societies. The environment built in reinforced concrete dates mainly from the post-war period, and is in urgent need of upgrading, when it is not already too late and the only remaining solution is demolition.
Damage to reinforced concrete structures is always linked to the presence of water and, in common environments, to the corrosion of reinforcement, which causes swelling of the steel and spalling in the concrete.
