1.1 Principles
The seismic strengthening of structures with steel solutions applies, of course, to older iron and cast-iron structures and steel frameworks, but also to timber, reinforced concrete and masonry structures.
The quantities of steel used for these reinforcements are not always plentiful, but the material's ductility makes it an essential link in the chain of resistance of repaired or reinforced structures to earthquakes. Depending on the nature of the structure to be strengthened, interventions involve the installation of additional stabilizers, reinforcements or confinement of beam or column sections in steel corsets.
