In the building industry, the purpose of waterproofing is to prevent water penetrating the structure. It can also prevent the passage of water vapour, but this role is generally fulfilled by the vapour barrier.
Four different roles can be fulfilled by waterproofing coatings.

Durability of structures
The aim here is to provide lasting protection for the entire life of the structure against any damage that may be caused to its structure, thereby affecting its solidity. In particular, in the building and civil engineering sectors, concrete and masonry structures need to be protected against excessive penetration of water (rain, soil, aggressive or otherwise), which could then corrode steel reinforcements or damage wooden roof panels.
