2. Characterization of solid wood

2.1 Wood structure

A cross-section of the wood (figure 1 ) reveals :

  • in the middle, a dark part, the heartwood, dead wood that supports the tree;

  • a lighter-coloured peripheral part, the sapwood, the living wood that carries the raw sap;

  • concentric growth rings that originate in the cambium ;

  • bark.
