2.1 Wood structure
A cross-section of the wood (figure 1 ) reveals :
in the middle, a dark part, the heartwood, dead wood that supports the tree;
a lighter-coloured peripheral part, the sapwood, the living wood that carries the raw sap;
concentric growth rings that originate in the cambium ;
bark.
