1. Wood-based materials or how to improve the properties of wood

Each evolution of wood has always been conducted with a view to improving existing properties or seeking out new ones in order to overcome the weaknesses or shortcomings of solid wood, in particular :

  • the degree of anisotropy ;

  • property variability ;

  • dimensional sensitivity to humidity.

In the end, wood derivatives have more homogeneous and less anisotropic characteristics than solid wood, with each type of material designed for very specific uses.

As a result, the performance of certain wood derivatives can make a positive contribution to the strength and durability of structures. Depending on their characteristics and dimensions, they can be used as floors, walls, sails, spandrels, lintels, roofing supports, bracing...
