4. Some data compression selection criteria

4.1 Computer data

The criteria for choosing a computer data compression technique are essentially :

• the importance of the compression ratio ;

• possession of a business license ;

• the durability of the algorithm;

• calculation time.

The extensive use of the LZ77 algorithm suggests that this is the best compromise in terms of these criteria. It is true that the compression ratio obtained, while lower than that of other more sophisticated techniques, is satisfactory for a reduced complexity and therefore a low computation time (compression, decompression).
