2. Characteristics of the "radiomobile" channel
For the purposes of the following study, the "mobile radio" channel will be used as a reference, in order to be able to work under the most difficult conditions. The transmission system designed to serve mobiles can also be used for fixed receivers.
2.1 Echoes and propagation channels
The terrestrial hertzian channel is characterized by the presence of echoes. When using fixed or portable reception, the probability of receiving only a direct wave from a transmitter is low. The challenge, therefore, is to develop a modulation system that ignores, or compensates for, the negative effects of echoes.
This is the aim of OFDM, developed by CCETT (Centre commun d'études de télédiffusion et télécommunications) in the late 1980s.
