7. Conclusion

This study of signal digitization is by no means exhaustive, but it does set out the principles that are essential to know, and which should be summarized here.

The sampling frequency is common to the 525/59.94 and 625/50 standards:

  • 13.5 MHz for luminance ;

  • 6.75 MHz for chrominance.

An orthogonal sampling structure was chosen.

The γ-corrected signal is quantized to 8 bits per component.

Spectrum aliasing problems are solved by pre-filtering and post-filtering.

Knowledge of these data allows us to calmly approach the principles of digital video signal compression, an essential phenomenon for television.
