2.1 Separating the front and rear waves of a loudspeaker
An isolated loudspeaker behaves like a dipole. Each time its diaphragm moves, it creates a zone of pressure on one side and a zone of depression on the other (figure 1 ).
The movement of the air entrained by the membrane is thus disrupted by a short-circuit effect due to the displacement of particles from high to low pressure. This has two damaging consequences:
dipolar radiation ;
a reduction in propagated energy.
