4. Digital-S format
The analog S-VHS format was a big hit with the general public, but also with professionals, especially on the North American market. It was tempting for Japanese manufacturer JVC to take the mechanics of this format and add digital electronics. This explains the birth of the Digital-S format, which nevertheless competes with Panasonic's DVCPRO formats, even though both companies belong to the same Matsushita group.
Digital-S is covered by the SMPTE 316M standard and is known as D-9.
4.1 Recorded signals
In the case of video, these are 4:2:2 signals with 8 binary characters, to which an intra-frame bit-rate reduction is applied using the TCD algorithm. The starting bitrate of 166 Mbits/s is thus reduced to 50 Mbits/s, giving a low compression...
