1. Transport container formats
They are distinguished by the transport mode and environment to which they are associated (point-to-point or point-to-multipoint transmission, unidirectional or bidirectional, synchronous or non-synchronous).
1.1 Digital audio/video link formats
These container-formats relate to interfaces and transfer links between digital audiovisual equipment, enabling point-to-point, short-distance transport of digital audio and/or video data, in the form of continuous bitstreams, either in native formats, or possibly in compressed formats. The standards also specify the "physical level" of the links, i.e. the parameters of the transmission media (signals, cables and connectors).
