3.1 Definition
The definition of timbre is based on a kind of default observation. When we attempt to compare two sounds, we can easily judge that they are different when their sonies differ or when their pitches differ, even if the conditions of presentation are otherwise identical. In terms of the physical parameters of the stimuli, these differences have a simple meaning, as we have seen in the preceding paragraphs.
When presentation conditions, loudness and pitch are identical but the auditory sensations produced differ, the timbre is said to differ.
