Externalisation ; Externalization
An auditory event is generally perceived as being "externalized", i.e. originating from the transmitting source located in the environment around the listener.
Conversely, virtual sources reproduced on headphones are often perceived as internalized, i.e. located in or very close to the head (referred to as "intracranial localization"). The binaural technique makes it possible, a priori, to reproduce in headphones sounds perceived as externalized. However, the sensation of externalization depends on many factors (individual HRTFs or not, dynamic binaural cues, artificial reverberation, etc.).
