7. Complementary shielding protection
Shielded cables can be fitted with additional protection such as filter cables, surface-effect screens or amplitude limiters.
7.1 Filter cables
These are shielded cables in which the primary cable insulation is given absorbent properties by the addition of materials with moderate electrical conductivity.
The cable behaves like a low-pass filter whose transfer function depends on the cable's size and physical composition. The cut-off frequency is generally above 10 MHz.
The filtering cable is often covered with a medium-performance shield, combining the reducing action of the transfer impedance and the attenuation of the interference generated during its propagation inside the cable.
