2.1 Principles

Exploration of the earth's subsurface using a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is aimed at two types of application: detection of buried structures (cavities, pipes, cables, water tables, mines, masonry structures, etc.) and characterization of the dielectric properties (the magnetic permeability of any subsurface constituent is assumed to be constant and equal to that of air) of the subsurface at depth (gradients or contrasts in true permittivity, water content, etc.)
