5.1 Traffic monitoring/analysis

One of the first recommendations for operators, if they haven't already done so, is to put in place the means to analyze traffic passing over the mobile network. As indicated in Arbor, the majority of mobile operators have no real detailed knowledge of the traffic handled by their mobile infrastructure, and therefore have no means of detecting suspicious traffic, which can be the cause of service quality degradation, or even unavailability in the most severe cases. Information from various equipment (gateways, firewalls, translation equipment, etc.) must be processed and analyzed. Specific functions, such as probes, are also required to analyze control and user traffic.
