2. Physics of fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals

Units used in the article

We use the nanometer (nm) as the unit of length and the electronvolt (eV) for energy. The electronvolt is the kinetic energy acquired by an electron accelerated from rest by a potential difference of 1 V, i.e. 1 eV = 1.6 x 10 -19 J. This corresponds to the order of magnitude of the energies involved in the excitation/de-excitation of valence electrons in atoms, molecules or nanocrystals.

2.1 Size effects

The nanocrystals discussed here are an important example of new artificial nano-objects.
