2. Glass transition
Glass transition is the term given to physical phenomena that occur in a viscosity range between 10¹² and 10¹⁴ Pa.s. It is a characteristic of glass-generating materials, and can be found in oxide glasses, fluoride glasses, nitrate glasses and metallic glasses alike.
2.1 Phenomenological aspects of glass transition
As it cools below melting temperature, the viscosity of the supercooled metastable liquid increases. Atomic movements are gradually impeded. At high temperatures, the time required for atoms to reach the atomic configuration corresponding to the metastable liquid is short.
