2. Archaeological prospecting and remote sensing

For the archaeologist, inventorying archaeological sites is a fundamental task. The term "archaeological site" is used here in a very broad sense. It covers all forms of land occupation that result in the presence of material remains in a more or less man-made space. This may be housing, but also road infrastructure (roads, paths, etc.), agro-pastoral infrastructure (fields, enclosures, terraces, ditches, etc.), economic infrastructure (lime kilns, coalfields, mines, quarries, etc.), military infrastructure (trenches, batteries, fortifications, etc.) or territorial infrastructure (boundaries marked by ditches, for example). Most archaeological sites are totally or partially buried, and many are still unknown. Yet, even hidden, they are an integral part of our daily lives.
