6. Outlook and developments

This article reviews the influence of light on plant growth and highlights the contribution of LED technology to horticulture. This technology, as energy-efficient as it is versatile in its uses, is the tool that is revolutionizing this field from both an industrial and a scientific point of view. In the near future, it will make it possible to develop new approaches to indoor horticulture, and thus provide an answer to one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century: that of sustainable food production. As also illustrated in this article, the mechanisms of photochemical biosynthesis for leafy vegetables, fruit plants and herbs have yet to be fully understood.
