4. Applications

Thermal sources, which have been developed over the last ten years on the basis of the concepts outlined above, are now beginning to be used in a wide range of applications. Here are a few examples.

4.1 Gas detection

Infrared is the spectral region par excellence in which many gases exhibit absorption lines linked to the rotational and vibrational resonances of chemical bonds. Absorption spectra show lines that are specific to certain gases, making it possible not only to distinguish them from one another, but also to obtain quantitative information on concentration (figure 18 ).
