2. Measuring structural parameters of optical fibers

These measurements are systematically carried out by the optical fiber manufacturer, at the various stages of the process (preform, fiber drawing). They can be repeated by the cable or system manufacturer for quality control purposes.

2.1 Index profile measurement

Although it only has an indirect effect on transmission parameters (attenuation, dispersion), knowledge of the index profile is essential for checking the conformity of the optical fiber and the homogeneity of its characteristics along its entire length.
