four-wave mixing

Non-linear process of order 3 involving two pump waves, a signal wave and a complementary wave. When phase-matched, it transfers energy efficiently from the pump to the signal and complementary waves.

phase self-modulation

3rd-order non-linear effect involving a single wave, responsible for spectral broadening of the incident pulse.

frequency drift

Characteristic of a pulse with spectral components distributed over time.

group speed dispersion

Generally noted β ₂ , variation of group velocity with frequency or wavelength. It is responsible for frequency drift.
