6. Miscellaneous applications
Although the generalized Lorenz-Mie theories (for the sphere and the infinite cylinder) are of recent origin, many applications have emerged, and it is to be expected that many more, some unexpected, will follow. These theories are useful whenever a phenomenon involves interaction between a laser beam and a suitable particle, when the characteristic dimension d of the particle (diameter of the sphere, diameter of the cross-section of an infinite cylinder) is not small compared with the transverse dimension w of the beam.
