5.1 Regulatory framework

Ordinance no. 2010-1579 of 17/12/2010 containing various provisions adapting to European Union law in the field of waste, transposes the provisions of Directive 2008/98/EC on waste into French law. This ordinance clarifies existing law and updates national waste legislation.

At the heart of this legislation is a simplified definition of waste.

By definition, "waste" is "any substance or object, or more generally any movable asset, which the holder discards or intends or is obliged to discard".
