8. Developments in cupola technology

Experiments are being carried out in many foundries to improve cupola operation and optimize the production of liquid cast iron.

8.1 Double row of nozzles

The double row of tuyeres allows the use of coke of a smaller grain size, or of another quality and/or to increase the steel rate. The use of a smaller coke increases the CO 2 reduction reaction by the coke pieces in the bench, which decreases the thermal efficiency. The second row of nozzles increases the combustion index and, consequently, the amount of energy available.
