2.1 MgO-C refractories in contact with converter slag and steel ladle slag

These examples illustrate the transition from a corrosion-dissolution mechanism to a corrosion-erosion mechanism.

MgO-C refractories consist of magnesia aggregates several millimeters in size, bound by a matrix containing fine magnesia (< 100 μm), graphite flakes, and fine carbon (between 10 and 500 nm). Metal powders (particularly aluminum) are often added to limit the oxidation of carbon by air
