Describing the use of composite materials in the various functions that make up an automobile shows that there are enormous opportunities for new, innovative applications. Materials and processing techniques are available, but they need to be improved and adapted to automotive applications. There is a need to provide more representative material data that can be used in simulation software to eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming prototype testing and validation.
From the outset of a new project, close collaboration between the automaker, materials suppliers and parts suppliers is essential to success.
Small and medium-sized production runs of vehicles, such as the electric vehicles of the future, should be favored, as they are well suited to the performance of manufacturing processes for composite parts.
