5. Accidental bulk polymerization of reactive monomers
Bulk polymerization of reactive monomers such as vinyl acetate, acrylic acid and others, is not usually implemented in industrial processes due to the violence of the reaction. However, this type of reaction does occur in accidental polymerizations involving recycled monomer storage tanks and preparation tanks containing premixes.
Recycled monomers are obtained in polymerization processes in which the monomer conversion rate is not 100%. Unreacted monomers are recovered and stored for recycling in the polymerization process. These monomers contain little or no polymerization inhibitor, and may contain traces of free-radical polymerization initiator. They are much less stable than commercial monomers containing a standardized concentration of radical polymerization inhibitor and no trace of radical initiator.
