3. Gearbox ratio selection

Gear selection is not as straightforward as it might first appear. It calls on objective considerations, such as the vehicle's maximum speed in the top gear, but also on subjective observations linked to driving pleasure, as in the case of gear ratios. Added to this are constraints relating to pollutant emissions and fuel consumption, making the choice of gear ratios a delicate compromise.
