1.1 Biomass-based resources
The definition of biomass is set forth in European Directive 2009/28/EC of April 23, 2009 [Doc. BE 8 550]:
"Biomass is the biodegradable fraction of products, waste, and residues of biological origin from agriculture (including plant and animal matter), forestry, and related industries—including fisheries and aquaculture—as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial and municipal waste."
It covers:
agricultural biomass from annual crops, which produce the basic components used—such as sugars, starch, fatty acids, and their byproducts (straw, husks, stalks, leaves, shells, etc.);
