4. Protection system applications

Knowing the injury criteria for the human head, it is now possible to design, validate, evaluate and optimize a protection system for the human head in relation to these biomechanical criteria. This requires the MEF of the human head presented above, as well as a MEF of the protection system under consideration. The latter must first be validated for a given set of impact configurations. Once the two models have been coupled, the complete model of the head and protection system can be subjected to impact. During this numerical simulation, the mechanical quantities calculated are compared with the tolerance limits of the fabrics. This comparison determines the protective capacity of the system in question. This method can even be used to discriminate between certain types of injury.
