The evolution of fuel consumption worldwide, illustrated in figure 5 , highlights the strong growth in diesel consumption, particularly in Europe, while the United States and Canada are major consumers of gasoline. This trend explains the major national technological choices that have been made, with Europe generally favoring the thermochemical route for biodiesel synthesis, while the United States, a major importer of gasoline, favors the fermentative route for the production of gasoline-substitutable ethanol.
