5.1 Different types of converters and their applications

There are three types of converters:

  • 4-quadrant single-phase rectifier (figure 16 a) delivering a regulated rectified voltage which, from the secondary voltage of the transformer, serves as a DC bus for supplying the inverter. It is reversible and operates as an inverter during regenerative braking. It is sometimes referred to as a single-phase forced-switching bridge (PMCF), mixed rectifier, PWM inverter (pulse-width modulation, active rectifier);
