3.1 Regulation at source

To limit noise at source, noise emission limits for rolling stock are laid down in European reference texts known as Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI). Conventional rolling stock (< 250 km/h) is covered by the TSI "Trans-european conventional rail system – Subsystem rolling stock – TSI rolling stock – noise". High-speed rolling stock must comply with the TSI "Directive 96/48/EC – Interoperability of the trans-european high speed rail system – Technical specification for interoperability – Rolling stock sub-system". Rolling stock complying with these TSIs is suitable for operation on the European rail network. In exceptional cases, derogations may be granted for operation on the national network.
