4. Complementing or replacing adhesion

4.1 Rack

If the tractive effort required to overcome gravity due to the line profile becomes too great, the adhesion available to the wheel-rail bearing is insufficient and must be supplemented or replaced. The first solution is to fit a rack and pinion pair (figure 23 ).
