2. Mechanisms of marine corrosion
The main modes of corrosion are all liable to come into play. The specific characteristics of seawater, however, easily lead to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion , encouraged by chloride ions, galvanic corrosion , encouraged by the increased electrical conductivity, and biocorrosion , encouraged by biological activity. Finally, marine corrosion occurs differently depending on whether the metal is permanently submerged, alternating with dry periods, only in contact with sea-spray, etc.
