5. Conclusion

Customs formalities are constantly evolving, as EU bodies strive to adapt them to the global economic environment. French companies are not sufficiently aware of the importance of managing customs formalities for the success of their import and export operations.

In France, the simplified procedures offered by Community and national regulations are quite widely used: 2,688 had been granted by February 2011, but this is still relatively low in relation to the number of companies involved in import and export operations.

What about Authorized Economic Operator status? Only 423 companies had obtained this status in France in February 2011.

In Germany, the number of incumbent companies exceeds 2,000.
