3. Seiches

3.1 Description of the phenomenon

Seiches are periodic oscillations, damped or sustained, in large bodies of water (roadsteads, harbor basins, canals, straits, lakes, etc.). They are gravity waves, with periods ranging from an order of magnitude minute to several hours. They manifest themselves mainly as horizontal oscillating movements, which are a nuisance for moored ships, and relatively slight vertical movements.
