3. γ-photon activation analysis

3.1 Nuclear reactions involved, sources of γ-photons

γ-photons can be used in analysis through two distinct nuclear interactions: photoexcitation and nuclear reaction.

Nuclear photoexcitation leads to a nucleus identical to the initial nucleus but in an excited state; it returns to the normal state by emitting one or more γ photons.

After excitation with relatively low-energy γ photons (a few MeV), this process can be used to assay elements with atomic numbers above 30 (Table 8 ). In practice, the sensitivity of these assays is in the tens of µg to mg...
