1. Organic and bio-organic structural analysis

The mass spectrum can yield several types of structural informations, principally the molecular mass (and perhaps an elemental analysis) and peaks characteristic of chemical activity that make the reconstruction of the molecular structure possible. The very existence and appearance of this data depends greatly on the ionization method used.

1.1 Molecular masses

With electron impact ionization, the molecular peak is theoretically the peak for the highest m   / z . It is not unusual, however, that if the molecular ion is easily fragmented, this peak is absent from the mass spectrum.
