NMRI has rarely been applied to everyday chemistry and chemical engineering. Simple chemical reactions in solution are generally considered to be spatially homogeneous, but can become heterogeneous on larger scales due to non-uniformities in temperature and reactant or catalyst concentration. Spatial reaction irregularities pose a problem for heterogeneous catalysis and polymerization reactions, during which rapid viscosity increases can "freeze" heterogeneities.
