1. Definitions

Aerosol: droplets of liquid finely dispersed in a volume of gas. It is formed by turbulence on the surface of liquids.

Adjustment (of a piston pipette): manufacture within the appropriate tolerances or adjustment of the device by the supplier, in order to guarantee, for a reference temperature of 20 ˚C, the specified metrological performance. Adjustment of the pipette so that the actual value corresponds to the target value.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate): provides energy for many enzyme-catalyzed reactions and can therefore alter biological samples.

Systematic bias (of a piston pipette): difference between dispensed volume and nominal volume or selected volume of volumetric piston devices. For compliance testing, systematic bias is estimated by taking the average of 10 measurements.
