Potentiometry is an analytical method that links a measurement of electrode potential to the activity of a species in solution. The corresponding electrode is called an indicator electrode.
The indicator electrode (potential ), chosen according to the nature of the solute to be determined, is included in a galvanic chain comprising a reference electrode (of potential ) and one or two electrolytes:
