1. pH measurement
1.1 Basic principles
The concept of pH (hydrogen potential), first introduced in 1909 by Sörensen, is used to measure the acidity of a solution, acidity in the Brönsted-Lowry sense, i.e. concerning the exchange reactions of the H + ion (also called proton).
pH is related to the activity of H + ions solvated by the solvent molecules in which they have been dissolved:
