Raman scattering spectrometry, like infrared absorption, is a technique for observing the vibrational states (and rotational states in the case of gases) of a molecule. We'll start by reviewing a few notions of vibrational molecular dynamics, before looking at how electromagnetic radiation can interact with matter, in order to provide quantitative information on the nature of these dynamics (frequency, vibration symmetry, etc.).
