5. The ARINC 653 standard
5.1 Standard overview
This standard was born in the aeronautics sector, an application framework with extremely strong constraints in terms of operating safety. This explains the execution model adopted, as we shall see. It is the definition of an interface between an operating system (necessarily real-time) of an avionics execution medium and the application software, hence the name APEX (Application/excutive). It fits naturally into the framework of work on modular architectures used in avionics: AMI (Avionique Modulaire Intégrée) or IMA (Integrated Modular Avionics). Work on the standard began in 1991, with the first standard published in 1996. They can be found at http://www.aviation-ia.com/aeec/projects/apex...
