6. Conclusion

The value of Petri nets in modeling production systems and, more generally, discontinuous or discrete systems is well established. A quarter of a century old, this paradigm has now conquered not only research laboratories, but above all the industrial world. Numerous studies have already been carried out using Petri nets to dimension, design, evaluate and control automated systems.

As described in this issue, there are many variants and extensions of autonomous Petri nets, introducing notions of time, predicates or interpretation, colors, not to mention stochastic, temporal, object, fuzzy, algebraic structure, continuous, hybrid and other notions. We're witnessing a profusion of models, tools and techniques, and it's still difficult to make a choice among the formalisms that have been defined.
